Why No Legitimate Firm Will Ever Ask for Your Seed Phrase

A short explainer on why seed phrases must remain private — always — and how this single rule protects you from "recovery scams".

May 17, 2026

If you remember one rule about cryptocurrency, make it this: a seed phrase is the wallet. Anyone who has it can move every asset.

What a seed phrase is

A 12 or 24-word recovery phrase that derives every private key. Portable across compatible wallet apps. Not bound to a device. There is no "reset password".

What it is not

  • Not a customer-service field.
  • Not something an exchange ever asks for.
  • Not something a "recovery agent" should ever request.

Common scripts to refuse

  • "We need to verify your wallet to release frozen funds."
  • "Input your phrase to upgrade your wallet."
  • "You need to validate your phrase to clear a sanctions hold."

All theft.

Where to store a seed phrase

  • Offline, ideally on metal, in two separated places.
  • Never typed into any website.
  • Never photographed.
  • Never shared.

What to do if you typed it

Treat the wallet as compromised. Move funds to a new wallet whose seed has never been entered online.
